Carrie Haughawout was named Deputy Director of the Ohio Department of Insurance in April 2017. Haughawout is responsible for leading policy development within the department and aligning regulatory oversight with department policy, in addition to assisting in the daily operations of the department and overseeing special projects.
Carrie Haughawout joined the Ohio Department of Insurance in January of 2011 as Assistant Director of Health Policy to direct the ongoing policy development and implementation of health care legislation. In January of 2014 she was elevated to the position of Assistant Director of Policy and Product Coordination. Haughawout advised policymakers and industry leaders on the impacts of the Affordable Care Act and she ensured the Department was prepared to address challenges to Ohio’s health insurance market. In addition to her health policy role, Haughawout oversaw departmental policy development and the product regulation and actuarial services area.
Haughawout has more than 20 years of public policy experience, with a focus on health care and small business. She previously worked at the Ohio Chamber of Commerce as the Director of Health Care and Small Business Council. In that role, Haughawout managed the activities of the Chamber’s small business arm and was viewed as an expert about health care and its impact on small businesses.
Previously, Haughawout held leadership and policy roles for former Speakers of the House, as well as legislative roles for former representatives Shawn Webster and Jim Aslanides.
