OSHIIP Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP). 

Volunteers drive OSHIIP. Dedicated people are needed to be volunteers in all parts of Ohio. As a volunteer you’ll learn Medicare basics; you’ll help people in your community, and you’ll have the satisfaction of taking part in a truly worthy cause.
Licensed insurance agents, or those affiliated with an insurance company, a claims filing service or financial planning service are not eligible for our program. Being an OSHIIP volunteer would constitute a conflict of interest.
The OSHIIP initial volunteer training consists of self-paced on-line training modules with about 8-hours of material including videos, resources, knowledge checks and a final exam.  Once the online modules are completed, volunteers meet with the OSHIIP community liaison in their area and are expected to report regular client contacts, public media, outreach, and attend annual volunteer refresher training sessions to maintain an active volunteer status.

​The Ohio Department of Insurance provides Medicare beneficiaries with free, objective health insurance information and one-on-one counseling through a program called the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP). OSHIIP's hotline experts, speaker's bureau, and trained volunteers educate consumers about Medicare, Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D), Medicare Advantage options, Medicare supplement insurance, long-term care insurance, and other health insurance matters. 

OSHIIP is the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program.
